Australia’s First Part-Time Doctor of Medicine Pathway to Launch at University of Sydney
22 May 2026
Under the new model, students will be able to complete selected parts of the MD program over an extended timeframe, beginning with third year studies. The change will allow eligible students to complete Year 3 across two academic years instead of one.
The university says students will still complete the same curriculum and assessments as full-time students, but with a more flexible study structure.
Applications for the part-time pathway will open in June 2026, with the first intake starting in January 2027. The initial rollout will take place at Westmead Clinical School and the School of Rural Health in Dubbo, with possible expansion later.
The move has been welcomed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, which says flexible training options could help attract more doctors into general practice and support workforce growth.
GP registrar Dr Samantha Hodges said part-time study may appeal to students who need flexibility and could encourage more to consider a career in general practice.
University leaders said the change reflects the reality that many students balance study with caring responsibilities, disability, or other life pressures.
However, advocates say further reforms may still be needed, including more flexible clinical placements and paid training opportunities, to make medical education fully accessible and sustainable.
