Australians encouraged to talk early about end-of-life care during Palliative Care Week
09 May 2026
Australians are being urged to start important conversations about palliative and end-of-life care as National Palliative Care Week 2026 begins.
Running from 10 to 16 May, this year’s theme, “Getting to the heart of it: Big Questions. Real Answers”, encourages people to ask questions, share their wishes, and seek trusted information about future care.
Palliative Care Australia Interim CEO Simon Waring said many people wrongly believe palliative care is only for the final days of life, when it can actually start much earlier alongside other treatments.
He said palliative care focuses on helping people with life-limiting illness live as well as possible, while also supporting families and carers.
Australians are being encouraged to think about questions such as what matters most to them, what care they would want, and who should know their wishes.
Each day in Australia, more than 450 people die from life-limiting illnesses that could benefit from palliative care, but many do not receive it early enough or at all.
Health leaders say access to care should not depend on where a person lives or their background.
Across the country, hospitals, community groups, and volunteers will hold events, education sessions, and public discussions during the week. Landmarks will also be lit up in orange to show support.
People are being encouraged to take part by attending events, sharing information, or simply starting conversations with family and friends about end-of-life wishes.
