Australian Government Invests $15 Million in New Lung Disease Treatment Research
01 Jul 2026
Funded through the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), the investment will support Monash University and Atisama Therapeutics in developing an innovative inhaled RNA therapy for chronic lung disease.
Unlike many current treatments that mainly focus on relieving symptoms, the new therapy aims to slow disease progression, reduce flare-ups and improve long-term health outcomes for people living with chronic lung conditions.
The treatment is delivered directly into the lungs using a nebuliser, allowing the RNA medicine to target inflammation and scarring that contribute to ongoing lung damage.
Researchers hope this targeted approach will offer a more effective way to treat chronic lung disease while improving patients' quality of life.
The funding highlights the Australian Government's continued investment in medical research and the development of innovative therapies that have the potential to improve healthcare both nationally and internationally.
