Australia to fund new pathway for childhood cancer clinical trials

The funding will come through the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) from 2027–28 and will support efforts to establish international CAR-T clinical trial opportunities in Australia.
CAR-T therapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses a patient’s own immune cells as part of the treatment process. Bringing international trials to Australia could give families access to these research opportunities without needing to travel overseas.
The funding is the first investment through the MRFF’s Australian Cancer Research Program, which is designed to support a more coordinated approach to cancer research across the country.
The government expects applications for the grant opportunity to open in June 2027.
