Australia Launches New Vaccination Campaigns Amid Falling Rates

27 Apr 2026

Federal Health and Ageing Minister Mark Butler recently introduced the Childhood Immunisation Campaign and the Winter Vaccination Program. These aim to remind parents to keep childhood vaccines up to date and encourage older Australians to protect themselves against respiratory illnesses.

Doctors from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) say the approach is helpful but lacks a personal touch. Dr Michael Tam said national messaging alone is not enough to change people’s views. He believes trust is built through local communities and strong relationships with GPs.

Childhood vaccination rates in Australia have dropped to their lowest level in five years, leaving many young children unprotected. Health officials are also dealing with outbreaks of diseases such as diphtheria in Western Australia and measles exposure sites in Victoria.

Experts say vaccine hesitation is being driven by misinformation, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic period. Some parents are also not prioritising vaccinations due to busy lifestyles or concerns about vaccine safety.

Dr Peter Markey from the RACGP said some groups at higher risk are still missing out on vaccines under the National Immunisation Program. He also highlighted concerns about people with severe mental illness, who face higher risks from flu but are not always included in free vaccination programs.

Both doctors support better use of GP clinics and trusted healthcare professionals to improve vaccine confidence. They say resources like SKAI can help doctors communicate better with hesitant patients without creating conflict.

GPs remain the main providers of vaccinations in Australia and are seen as key to improving uptake in the long term, as they continue working closely with patients over time.
