Are We Screening Gestational Diabetes Properly for Multicultural Australia?
19 Mar 2026
Gestational diabetes can be a warning sign for lifelong health risks like type 2 diabetes. Up to 20% of pregnancies in Australia are affected, rising to over 35% for South Asian women.
Much of the current research guiding care doesn’t reflect Australia’s multicultural population. Dr Samarawickrama’s work looks at lifestyle, health patterns, and care during and after pregnancy, using a cohort where almost 80% of participants come from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
She hopes this research will lead to better screening, culturally appropriate advice, and follow-up care for all women.
