In his final weekly member update, Rait reflected on more than a decade of involvement with the AMA and highlighted the growing pressures facing medical professionals and the healthcare system.

Rait joined the AMA Federal Council more than 10 years ago, later serving as AMA Victoria President for three years and chairing the Federal Council for two years.

He will officially step down on Monday, with Dr Michael Bonning taking over as President and Dr Sarah Whitelaw becoming the new Vice President.

Growing Pressures on Doctors and Healthcare

Rait said doctors are facing increasing structural, cultural and psychological pressures that are affecting both their wellbeing and the wider health system.

He acknowledged that global financial challenges, government funding limits and resource shortages are adding to the pressure on medical professionals.

He stressed that supporting doctors, improving work-life balance and maintaining fairness in the workplace remain important priorities for the AMA.

He also encouraged doctors to stay connected to their professional purpose and remember the importance of providing quality care to patients.

AMA Highlights Support Services for Doctors

Rait said the AMA continues to push for appropriate healthcare funding and policies to protect the health system from wider budget pressures.

He warned that ongoing financial challenges could place further strain on healthcare services, making professional organisations increasingly important in supporting doctors.

He also reminded members about Drs4Drs, an independent support service established by the medical profession for doctors.

The service provides free, confidential support and referral options across Australia, 24 hours a day.

Doctors who need support, or know a colleague who does, can call 1300 374 377 at any time.

Continued Advocacy on Specialist Fees

Rait also highlighted the AMA's recent submission to the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing on the affordability of specialist fees.

The submission, which was covered by The Australian newspaper, raised concerns about the gap between the complex issues involved and the simplified arguments being presented in the debate.

He confirmed that the AMA would continue advocating for doctors and patients on specialist fee affordability.

New Leadership to Continue the Work

As he prepares to leave, Rait expressed confidence in incoming President Dr Michael Bonning and Vice President Dr Sarah Whitelaw.

He said the new leadership team would continue working on key issues, including private health insurance reform, aged care, rural healthcare access and specialist affordability.

Rait thanked AMA members for their trust and support over the past decade, describing his time in the role as a privilege.
