Recent discussions with the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing focused on the next stage of the Medical Cost Finder website, which is designed to help patients better understand potential healthcare costs.

As part of the consultation process, the AMA gained commitments for ongoing involvement in key areas of the reform. These include input into how indicative fees and out-of-pocket cost ranges are calculated, participation in data review processes, and continued consultation throughout implementation.

The AMA said greater transparency around how cost information is developed and presented will help ensure the system is practical and clinically informed.

The organisation also highlighted the challenge of balancing useful cost information for patients with privacy protections, particularly when dealing with detailed healthcare data.

Officials confirmed that the Medical Cost Finder website is not intended to provide individual quotes. Instead, it will serve as a starting point for conversations between patients and their healthcare team about treatment costs and informed financial consent.

The department is continuing work on data governance, analysis, and website improvements, with further consultation planned as the reforms progress.

The AMA said it will continue working with government and stakeholders to ensure the final model supports informed patient choice while reflecting the complexity of medical care and clinical practice.
