AMA Calls for Urgent Reform to Improve Healthcare in Aged Care Homes

11 Jun 2026

The AMA says Australians in aged care are currently missing out on timely and coordinated healthcare due to ongoing system failures. It argues that these gaps in care are unacceptable and must be addressed as a priority.

The statement highlights that aged care residents should have access to high-quality, coordinated medical care that reflects their individual needs, goals and preferences.

GPs, who often build long-term relationships with patients and understand their medical histories, are seen as central to delivering this care. However, the AMA says the current aged care system often disrupts these relationships once patients enter residential facilities.

It warns that care is often reactive and crisis-driven rather than planned and preventative, which can lead to poorer health outcomes and increased pressure on hospitals, including avoidable emergency presentations and ambulance ramping.

To address these issues, the AMA is calling for investment in integrated care models, improved funding, updated digital systems and stronger workforce planning to support sustainable care delivery in aged care settings.

The position statement outlines reforms intended to align aged care medical services with the new Aged Care Act and broader health system goals.
