AMA Calls for Action on Alcohol & Microplastics
03 Apr 2026
AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen spoke to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Disability as part of its inquiry into the health impacts of alcohol and other drugs.
Drawing on her experience as a GP, Dr McMullen called for a stronger focus on evidence-based and health-led approaches. She said people affected by alcohol and drug harms need support and care rather than judgement or stigma.
She also highlighted the importance of the medical workforce in addiction care, calling for ongoing investment in doctors and specialists, as well as long-term funding for community prevention and treatment programs.
The parliamentary inquiry is expected to release its final report in the second half of 2026.
Later in the week, AMA Vice President Associate Professor Julian Rait appeared before a Senate committee hearing focused on the health impacts of microplastics and other environmental exposures.
He told the inquiry that while concerns are increasing about substances such as microplastics and PFAS, there is still limited understanding of their long-term health effects.
A/Prof Rait warned that lack of certainty should not delay action, saying that waiting for definitive proof before taking steps is not consistent with a preventive health approach.
He noted that early research suggests possible links between these exposures and a range of health conditions, particularly affecting pregnancy, early childhood, and the first 1,000 days of life.
He also stressed that exposure is often unavoidable and difficult to reverse, so reducing preventable exposure should be prioritised alongside stronger research, regulation, and monitoring.
The AMA said public communication on these issues should be clear, balanced, and evidence-based to support both clinicians and the community.
