Ahpra seeks feedback on shared standards for health professionals
23 Oct 2026
The draft National Scheme Professional Capabilities Framework aims to establish minimum knowledge and skills expected of all health practitioners regulated under Australia’s National Scheme.
The proposed common capabilities are intended to help new graduates from approved education programs develop the skills needed for safe and competent practice. They could also support better teamwork between different health professions and improve outcomes for patients and clients.
The committee has developed two initial sets of capabilities, covering family, domestic and sexual violence (FDSV) and the safe use of digital health. These areas reflect current priorities under the National Scheme.
The FDSV capabilities aim to help practitioners recognise violence, respond appropriately and support victim-survivors. Health professionals may be the first, or sometimes the only, point of contact for people experiencing abuse.
The digital health capabilities focus on helping practitioners understand the benefits and risks of healthcare technologies, including artificial intelligence-based diagnostic tools, and use them safely in practice.
Professor Andrew Wilson AO, independent chair of the Accreditation Committee, said health practitioners needed the knowledge and confidence to support people affected by family, domestic and sexual violence. He also highlighted the growing role of digital technologies in healthcare and the importance of understanding their appropriate use.
The consultation will also consider how the proposed capabilities could be implemented and what effects they may have on different groups.
Public feedback is open until close of business on Friday, 18 December 2026.
