Both organisations said antisemitism causes serious harm by creating fear, exclusion and mistrust. In healthcare settings, it can discourage people from seeking care and affect the safety and wellbeing of Jewish patients, practitioners and staff.

Ms Segal said healthcare should be a safe place for everyone, including patients, practitioners and healthcare workers. She welcomed Ahpra’s decision to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism and its plans to introduce further measures to address the issue.

Ahpra is strengthening its ability to identify and respond to antisemitism through its regulatory processes. This includes providing staff with training, guidance and expert support to ensure concerns are managed with sensitivity, cultural understanding and consistency.

Ahpra CEO Justin Untersteiner said antisemitism has no place in healthcare and stressed the importance of ensuring all people feel safe when accessing care.

As part of its response, Ahpra has adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism as a reference tool and will use guidance from the Special Envoy’s handbook to support a consistent understanding of antisemitism in its modern forms.

Ahpra is also reviewing its Vexatious Notifications Framework following concerns that the complaints process may be misused. An advisory panel, including practitioners with lived experience of antisemitic notifications, will help improve safeguards and strengthen processes.

In addition, Ahpra is supporting research led by the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation to better understand the prevalence and impact of antisemitism in healthcare and to help inform future education and training initiatives for health practitioners.
