$98.1 Million in Research Funding to Support Better Health Outcomes

02 Nov 2026

The funding is being provided through three grant opportunities under the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).

Improving healthcare for people with disability

Up to $30 million is available through the 2026 Improving the Health of People with Disability grant program.

The funding will support research aimed at improving health outcomes and access to healthcare for people with disability. Projects will focus on inclusive healthcare throughout life, preventive services and providing people with the information and support needed to make informed decisions about their care.

Turning health research into practice

A further $20 million is available through the 2026 Improving Health Interventions and Services through Implementation Research grant program.

The funding will support pilot studies and larger research projects that test and improve healthcare interventions. This includes assessing whether new approaches are practical, affordable and effective, as well as finding ways to introduce evidence-based services and maintain them over time.

Speeding up research translation

The remaining $48.1 million will support the 2026 Rapid Applied Research Translation grant program.

This funding will help large research programs move findings into existing healthcare policies and clinical practice more quickly. Projects will focus on addressing gaps in healthcare, improving treatment approaches and working with patients, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders to put research into action.

Together, the three funding opportunities aim to improve healthcare delivery, strengthen evidence-based interventions and support better health outcomes across Australia.
