2026 Medical Training Survey opens for doctors in training

The Medical Training Survey is Australia's national survey for doctors in training and is used to identify strengths and areas where medical training can be improved. Findings help guide accreditation, workforce planning and education across the health sector.
Survey results are used by medical colleges, employers, the Australian Medical Council, medical associations and other organisations to support improvements in training. The data also helps trainees compare specialties and training locations when making career decisions.
This year's survey has been updated with a simpler design to make it easier to complete while continuing to collect detailed information about training experiences.
Most doctors in training will be invited to complete the survey when renewing their medical registration. Interns and international medical graduates will find the survey as a task within their Ahpra portal.
The survey now includes seven years of longitudinal data, making it one of Australia's most comprehensive sources of information on medical training experiences.
Five versions of the survey are available, tailored for interns, prevocational and unaccredited trainees, international medical graduates, specialist GP trainees and specialist non-GP trainees.
Medical Board of Australia Chair Dr Susan O'Dwyer said the consistently high response rate demonstrates that doctors in training value the opportunity to have their experiences heard and contribute to positive change across the profession.
The Medical Training Survey is conducted annually by the Medical Board of Australia and Ahpra in collaboration with specialist medical colleges, postgraduate medical councils, medical associations and other healthcare organisations. Participation is confidential.
