TGA Takes Action Over Medicine Packaging Safety Standards

According to the TGA, the medicine contained iron at a level that required child-resistant packaging, but it was supplied without this important safety feature. Child-resistant packaging helps reduce the risk of accidental poisoning, particularly in young children, and is a key requirement for medicines containing higher amounts of iron.
The TGA said medicine sponsors are responsible for ensuring their products comply with all Australian regulatory standards before they are supplied. Failing to meet these requirements can increase safety risks for consumers and weaken important public health protections.
The regulator also confirmed it will continue monitoring compliance and may take further enforcement action where necessary. Regulatory responses can include infringement notices, removal of products from the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG), or civil and criminal proceedings where appropriate.
