TGA considers tighter controls for 4-MBC in some sunscreens

The consultation follows a TGA review of 4-MBC, which considered international regulatory decisions and evidence alongside an independent assessment using the Australian Sunscreen Exposure Model.
The proposed changes would reduce the permitted concentration of 4-MBC in sunscreens as a precautionary measure.
The TGA has stated that Australians should continue using sunscreen. It is not proposing changes to sunscreen use, warnings, bans or recalls of products.
Sunscreen remains an important way to help protect against sunburn, skin damage and skin cancer.
For better sun protection, people are advised to use sunscreen, seek shade and wear protective clothing, hats and sunglasses.
People with specific concerns about their health or sunscreen ingredients should speak with their treating health practitioner.
The consultation will consider the findings of the TGA review and two applications received by the regulator.
