South Western Sydney conference to focus on sustainable general practice

SWSPHN’s annual conference, Future-proofing general practice: a deep dive on viability and sustainability, will be held on Sunday, 18 October 2026, at The William Inglis Hotel in Warwick Farm.
The event is for GPs, practice managers and general practice staff. It will run from 8.30am for a 9am start until 5.15pm.
Attendance is free and includes lunch. GPs can earn 6 RACGP-approved CPD hours.
The conference will cover business and management approaches that can help practices operate sustainably. Sessions will look at employment management, improving workflows, MBS billing, artificial intelligence and other digital health tools.
Challenges facing general practice
General practices in South Western Sydney are dealing with workforce and financial pressures.
Workforce shortages are linked to high workloads, staff burnout and GP retirements. The median age of GPs in the region is 54.
Since 2023, 59 practices in South Western Sydney have closed or amalgamated, with workforce shortages and financial viability among the challenges affecting practices.
These pressures have contributed to longer waiting times and reduced access to primary care services across the region.
Practical strategies for practices
The conference will provide information on ways to improve practice sustainability, workplace management and compliance.
Attendees will also explore how clinical and digital tools, including artificial intelligence, can support general practice.
Other areas will include managing employment relationships, improving MBS billing accuracy, strengthening teams and understanding the Strengthening Medicare measures.
Expert-led sessions
Speakers will include Greg Baker, AI Lecturer at Macquarie University; Eden Elliott-Griggs, Training and Development Manager at Wise Workplace Training; Kim Poyner, Director of MediCoach; and Wendy O’Meara, a Primary Care Consultant and MBS specialist.
Sessions will cover:
- The impact of artificial intelligence on general practice
- Employment relationships through case studies
- Leadership in general practice
- Managing change in primary care
- Building stronger teams and more efficient systems
- Understanding and making better use of the MBS
The program will include sessions for all attendees, along with separate sessions designed for GPs and practice managers/general practice staff.
