Parliamentary report calls for stronger action on alcohol and drug harms

The report supports a health-focused approach to alcohol and other drug harms and recommends improving access to treatment and strengthening coordinated action across Australia.
It also includes recommendations relating to alcohol marketing, tax measures, online sales and delivery, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and national health data.
The report reflects evidence provided by the Australian Medical Association (AMA), which called for alcohol and other drug use to be addressed as a health issue.
The AMA also recommended better access to care without stigma, stronger support for GPs and addiction specialists, increased investment in prevention and harm reduction, improved services in rural and remote areas, better data collection and action on social factors that affect health.
The federal government will now consider the committee’s recommendations.
