Palliative Care Australia appoints new chief executive officer
23 Apr 2026
Dr Hatherly brings around 20 years of experience across health, ageing, policy and research, most recently serving as CEO of The Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. His background also includes earlier work with Dementia Australia, where he was involved in research, policy development and consumer engagement.
The organisation says he has strong experience in national advocacy and in bringing together government, academic, industry and community stakeholders to support policy development.
Dr Hatherly said he was honoured to take on the role and looks forward to working with the organisation to improve outcomes for people living with life-limiting illness, as well as their families and carers.
PCA Chair Dr Peter Allcroft welcomed the appointment, saying Dr Hatherly’s experience across research, policy and service delivery will strengthen the organisation’s work and its influence across the sector.
He is due to start in the role on 8 July 2026. Interim CEO Simon Waring will remain in position during the transition period.
