New safeguards added to Medical Costs Finder legislation
17 Sep 2026
The amendments create a legal process for information on the Medical Costs Finder to be corrected, updated or removed when needed. This aims to address concerns about incorrect or misleading information remaining available to the public.
The changes also allow the minister to establish a review process for decisions about publishing, changing or removing information on the Medical Costs Finder.
The details of the review process are still to be confirmed. However, the new framework will allow practitioners to seek a review of published information.
Doctors, hospitals and insurers seeking a review will also be able to access information about how published figures were calculated. This is intended to provide greater transparency around the information.
The changes include several recommendations made by the Australian Medical Association (AMA) during consultation on the legislation.
The AMA said it will continue to monitor the legislation and provide members with updates on the review process.
