AMA Highlights Priorities for General Practice and Medical Leadership
The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has outlined its latest work to strengthen general practice, improve patient care and better support doctors across Australia.
Recent discussions focused on improving access to vaccinations through GP clinics and exploring funding models that support quality care while protecting doctors' clinical independence and patients' freedom to choose their healthcare provider.
The AMA also stressed the importance of teamwork in healthcare, saying pharmacists play an important role but should work alongside GPs to provide coordinated care rather than replacing medical services.
Another key focus was the release of the AMA's updated statement on the role of doctors. The association said the document explains the value of medical training, clinical experience and ongoing education in delivering safe, evidence-based healthcare.
To support the medical workforce, the AMA has launched a new pilot mentoring program for international medical graduates. Created with Monash University, the program is designed to develop practical mentoring skills and may be expanded nationally after the trial.
The association also continued discussions with federal representatives about improving access to healthcare in regional Australia and making medical fees easier for patients to understand.
Looking ahead, AMA members will have the opportunity to hear from candidates before the upcoming President and Vice President elections, which will be held during AMA26 next month.
