Ahpra sets out advice on commercial conflicts of interest

The guidance covers situations where practitioners may have competing business interests, including selling products or services directly to patients, subscription-based healthcare services, financial rewards linked to clinical work, and healthcare businesses that combine different services under one model.

Practitioners are encouraged to be open with patients about any relevant conflicts of interest during the informed consent process. They should also take steps to reduce the risk of these conflicts affecting clinical decisions.

Suggested measures include stepping away from certain decisions, giving patients a range of treatment options, and assigning particular duties to another person where suitable.

Ahpra also reminds employers and business owners that encouraging a practitioner to put commercial interests ahead of patient care is a criminal offence under the National Law.
