Your identity is torn apart’: A GP’s journey through addiction and recovery

19 Sep 2025

‘I could not believe life had turned in an instant like that,’ Dr Blake said.

‘It felt as though I had lost just about everything that was important to me at the time. Your identity is just torn apart.’

What followed was a long period of reflection, rehabilitation and rebuilding. Supported by his family, Dr Blake entered rehab, undertook psychological assessments and explored treatment for ADHD, which had been diagnosed during the process.

But one of the biggest turning points was joining Caduceus, a confidential support group for doctors dealing with substance use issues.

‘You just can’t imagine why speaking about it with others is so therapeutic, but it is,’ he said.
‘It treats the underlying shame and guilt, and gives you confidence to take further steps – whether that’s opening up to a loved one, seeing your doctor or going to rehab.’

Studies have shown groups like Caduceus play a vital role in recovery, not only by reducing stigma but also by helping doctors navigate professional challenges such as dealing with AHPRA.

Dr Blake acknowledges the fear many doctors feel about seeking help but stresses that confidentiality is protected – and that not seeking help carries greater risks.

In 2022, he received a suspended sentence from the Northern Territory Supreme Court. By mid-2025, the Medical Board allowed him to return to work as a GP under conditions. He has since resumed clinical practice in Victoria and says he has a renewed appreciation for medicine.

‘Working as part of a team in a busy clinic is something I missed so much,’ he said.
‘I’m really looking forward to getting to know my regular patients again. I’ve always loved the career.’

Dr Blake continues to attend Caduceus and hopes his story encourages others to reach out for help.

‘My intent is to continue indefinitely,’ he said.
‘It’s not only about what I gain from it – it’s also about contributing to the wellbeing of others navigating the same path.’
