Victoria’s Women’s Health Hubs to Offer Green Whistle Pain Relief for IUD Procedures
10 Nov 2025
IUDs are small, long-acting contraceptive devices inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy and can remain effective for 5–10 years. Many women and girls reported significant pain during IUD insertions, with some describing inadequate pain management during the procedure. One survey respondent from the Inquiry said:
“I experienced significant pain during the IUD insertion process. In this procedure, I was instructed to take Ibuprofen but was offered no further pain relief… I strongly support the use of the green whistle for people undertaking this procedure.”
About the green whistle:
The green whistle (Penthrox) is a handheld, self-administered inhaler containing methoxyflurane, a fast-acting pain-relieving drug. While self-administered by the patient, it is used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. It is commonly used by paramedics, sports clubs, and surf lifesavers.
Pilot program success:
The Peninsula Women’s SRH Hub has successfully piloted the green whistle for IUD procedures over the past few years. The pilot demonstrated improved patient comfort and informed the broader rollout across Victoria’s SRH Hubs.
The initiative will also be supported by expanded clinical best practice guidance, ensuring safer and more comfortable IUD procedures for women and girls across the state.
