South Australia Launches GP ADHD Training Program

South Australia Launches GP ADHD Training Program

29 Oct 2025

Developed with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, the program includes two RACGP online modules by the end of 2025, followed by a full-day in-person session. GPs who complete the training will be able to diagnose and initiate ADHD treatment for patients aged eight years and older.

Participants will also access resources from the Australasian ADHD Professionals Association (AADPA) and join six peer group learning sessions over nine months, fostering collaboration with paediatricians and psychiatrists to build a strong community of practice.

RACGP SA Chair Dr Siân Goodson said the program will make a “real difference” by expanding local GP capacity to provide timely ADHD care and reduce long waiting times for diagnosis.

Similar state-funded programs are underway in Western Australia, where GPs are being trained to diagnose and treat ADHD in patients aged 10 and older. Across Australia, ADHD affects around one in 20 people, and reforms in several states are aimed at increasing GPs’ role in managing the condition, with Victoria and the Northern Territory yet to announce programs.
