Updates to how staffing is rated in aged care Star Ratings
25 Sep 2025
Aged care homes in Australia receive an overall Star Rating from 1 to 5 stars, based on four areas:
-
Residents’ experience
-
Compliance
-
Staffing
-
Quality measures
From 1 October 2025, the Staffing rating will change to give a clearer picture of the care residents receive. The new rating will take into account the amount of care time provided by staff.
To achieve 3 stars or more for Staffing, aged care homes will need to meet legislated targets for both total care minutes and registered nurse care minutes.
These changes will start appearing in the Star Ratings from mid-2026.
Older people, their families, and carers can learn more about the updated Star Ratings, and find aged care homes and their ratings, using the Find a Provider tool. Fact sheets are also available for both residential aged care providers and consumers, explaining the changes in detail.
