Updated position statement on stewardship in healthcare

The AMA has released its updated Position statement on doctors’ role in stewardship of health care resources 2023, guiding doctors in practising effective stewardship in their day-to-day practice. Doctors have an ethical and professional responsibility to serve as stewards of healthcare resources, caring for the resources currently available to improve health while considering the resources needed to provide care into the future.
Stewardship aims to achieve the best possible health outcomes through the equitable use of resources while minimising adverse impacts and wasteful expenditure, reducing the environmental impact of healthcare and promoting sustainability and our ability to meet future health resource needs.
The position statement identifies the challenges doctors may face in practising stewardship, guides doctors in how to manage these challenges and advises how the wider medical profession, healthcare institutions, governments and the wider community can support doctors in achieving effective stewardship of healthcare resources.
