Tasmanian Team Achieves Top Qualifications in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine

Three members of the Department of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine in Tasmania have successfully completed the Advanced Certificate in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine (ANZCA), the highest award in their specialty.

Dr Tori Dawe (Fellow 2024), Dr San Clark (Fellow 2025), and Dr Andreas Hendarto (Registrar 2025) have now met the requirements to work towards becoming senior Diving and Hyperbaric Specialists.

Dr Juan Carlos Ascencio-Lane and Dr Elizabeth Elliott, Diving & Hyperbaric Physicians at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) and Co-Supervisors of Training, said this achievement is a significant milestone for the Tasmanian unit.

“This continues our proud tradition as the only unit in Australia and New Zealand to have candidates sit the exam every year since its launch, maintaining a 100% success rate,” Dr Ascencio-Lane said.

The Department of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine is recognised nationally for its expertise in managing diving-related incidents and other medical emergencies, including carbon monoxide poisoning, necrotising fasciitis, and chronic conditions such as diabetic ulcers and soft tissue radiation injuries.

“Our unit is also at the forefront of research, policy, and training within the field, making it an attractive place to work. The success of our candidates is supported by a dedicated team of nurses, technicians, and doctors who mentor and guide them through the process,” Dr Ascencio-Lane and Dr Elliott said.

Since ANZCA launched the highest qualification in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine in 2017, the RHH unit has maintained an unparalleled record, establishing itself as the most successful unit across Australia and New Zealand in preparing candidates for the exam.
