Stronger Protections for AHPRA Complainants
01 Dec 2025
Threatening, intimidating, dismissing, refusing to employ, or discriminating against a complainant now carries fines of up to $60,000 for individuals and $120,000 for organisations.
The new laws also prevent the misuse of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) to block investigations, a response to a 2022 review of medical practitioners in cosmetic surgery. AHPRA Chief Executive Justin Untersteiner said NDAs cannot take away anyone’s right to make a complaint.
“Public safety comes first,” Untersteiner said. “We rely on all evidence and cooperation to prevent harm, and anyone threatening a notifier or witness will be prosecuted.”
AHPRA reported 13,327 notifications about practitioners in 2024–25—a 19% increase in one year, the largest since the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme began in 2010.
