Stay safe in the heat this week

Simple steps to ensure you stay healthy in the hot conditions include drinking plenty of water, keeping cool with an air-conditioner or fan, and avoid going out during the hottest part of the day, which typically falls around 3pm.

You can also keep your home cool by closing curtains, blinds and windows during the day. If you need to leave home, cover up exposed skin and wear a hat, sunglasses and an SPF30+ or higher sunscreen on the face and exposed parts of your body.

It is also important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

Early signs of dehydration and heat-related illness include heavy sweating, having a raised body temperature, feeling dizzy or faint, fatigue, reduced appetite and increased thirst.

If you or someone you know is showing these signs, go to a cool, shaded place and lie down, drink plenty of water and fluids and try to cool down with a fan, air-conditioner or by placing a cool damp towel around your neck. If still unwell, seek medical advice as soon as possible.

Heatstroke can also occur during the warmer weather and requires urgent medical attention. Signs of heatstroke include a dry and swollen tongue, sudden rise in body temperature to greater than 40 degrees, disorientation or delirium, convulsions and a rapid pulse.
