Simplifying access to key health insights: My Health App

My Health App Helps Australians Access and Share Key Health Information
Developed by the Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA), the my health app makes it easier for people to access and share important health information, helping improve continuity of care and reducing the need to remember details during consultations.
Many people find it difficult to recall medical histories, including medicine changes, allergies, or recent test results. The app allows users to view and share key health information directly from their smartphones, including hospital discharge summaries, pathology results, and medicine lists once uploaded by healthcare providers to My Health Record.
A recent update also enables users to securely store and manage electronic prescriptions through their Active Script List, simplifying the management of medications.
Supporting GPs and Coordinated Care
While GPs can access and update My Health Record through their clinical systems, the app empowers patients to become active participants in their healthcare. For people seeing multiple healthcare providers, it ensures up-to-date information can be shared, helping reduce duplicated tests and improving care coordination.
Having patients arrive at consultations with access to their health information can streamline appointments, reduce time spent tracking missing details, and allow more focus on clinical decision-making and patient-centred care. The app is also especially useful in after-hours or emergency care, where unfamiliar healthcare providers can access critical information to prevent medicine errors and support safer clinical decisions.
Realising the Full Potential of My Health Record
The benefits of the app rely on healthcare providers actively contributing information, such as Event Summaries and other clinical documents, to My Health Record. Recent legislation now requires healthcare providers, starting with pathology and diagnostic imaging services, to share key health information by default.
The my health app includes strong security and privacy measures, giving users confidence their data is protected. Users control who can access their information and can see when it has been viewed. The app is free for both iOS and Android devices, making it accessible to Australians nationwide.
The RACGP encourages GPs to promote the my health app to patients and continue contributing accurate information to My Health Record. These combined efforts aim to support safer, more coordinated, and person-centred care across Australia.
