While he will continue his clinical work, Rawlin leaves behind a legacy of advocacy, education, and leadership across general practice in Victoria.

During his tenure, Rawlin held numerous roles, including Chair of RACGP Victoria, Chair of the Faculty of Specific Interests, GP supervisor, and education director. Current RACGP Victoria Chair Dr Anita Muñoz described him as a “generous mentor, advocate, and teacher” whose guidance has shaped countless careers in general practice.

Rawlin, a recipient of the Rose-Hunt Award in 2013, emphasised that clinical work and advocacy go hand in hand. “If you’re a vibrant and keen clinician, that is really helpful in your advocacy because it brings a practical element to what you’re trying to get across to politicians and others,” he said.

Reflecting on his career, Rawlin highlighted key achievements including the growth of RACGP education programs, increased visibility of the college at state and federal levels, and higher engagement in exams and training compared to when he first joined council.

The Melbourne-based GP, who has experience in emergency medicine and rural practice, encouraged other GPs to get involved in advocacy. “The main thing is to be at the table as part of the discussion. Unless you’re there, decisions will be made without you,” he said.

Now aged 65, Rawlin plans to continue clinical work, including his role as medical director of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria, while enjoying more flexibility in his personal time, including building a house on 20 acres.
