Prevenar 20 added to National Immunisation Program for children and at-risk adolescents

10 Sep 2025

Prevenar 20 is now included in the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for all children and for adolescents with specific medical risk conditions. The vaccine protects against more strains of pneumococcal disease than previous vaccines, helping prevent serious illness.

Most children will now receive three doses, while Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and those with certain medical conditions will receive four doses. All vaccinations should be reported to the Australian Immunisation Register.

Resources for health professionals and families
Updated resources are available to support the new schedule, including:

  • Program advice for health professionals

  • Consumer fact sheets and FAQs

  • NSW immunisation schedules

  • National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) FAQs and an upcoming webinar on 25 September 2025

  • SKAI materials for 2, 4, and 12-month childhood vaccinations

  • Fridge magnet cards and brochures outlining the National Immunisation Program schedule

These resources provide guidance on vaccine administration, what to expect after vaccination, and detailed information for families and healthcare providers.
