Information for your 2024 renewal of registration
Registration renewal is online-only
You must complete your registration renewal online. Read the renewal FAQs on the Ahpra website for helpful tips on logging on and information on what you need to do to renew. Don’t forget to keep your contact details up to date, which includes an email that is unique to you.
Registration fees this year
The fee for general registration has been set at $185 and will apply to the majority of nurses and midwives. If you hold both nursing and midwifery registration only need to pay one registration renewal fee. The renewal fee for nurses and midwives whose principal place of practice is New South Wales, is also $185.You can find the full schedule of fees on the NMBA website.
Professional indemnity insurance for privately practising midwives
In Australia, all regulated health practitioners are required to hold professional indemnity insurance (PII) to practise their profession.
Privately practising midwives have an exemption from PII requirements when providing intrapartum care for homebirths, regardless of where the baby is birthed.
To enable this exemption, privately practising midwives must comply with the NMBA's Safety and quality guidelines for privately practising midwives. This includes obtaining informed consent stating that appropriate PII arrangements will not be in force in relation to the midwife's practice.
Continuing professional development requirements for 2024
When you renew your general registration, you are asked to declare if you have met the CPD registration standard in the previous registration period. For a breakdown of CPD hours relevant to your context of practice, read our CDP factsheet.
If you have been registered less than a year, the CPD hours you are required to do will be calculated on a pro-rata basis:
- registered for 0-3 months: minimum 5 hours
- registered for 3-6 months: minimum 10 hours
- registered for 6-9 months: minimum 15 hours
- registered for 9-12 months: minimum 20 hours.
If you are renewing for the first time, the studies which qualified you for registration as a nurse or a midwife do not count as CPD.
