NuvaRing is a flexible vaginal ring that releases a combination of estrogen and progestogen over a monthly cycle, offering an alternative to daily oral contraceptives. With PBS listing, the cost drops from $270 a year to $126.40, or $31.60 per script for three months. From 1 January 2026, the price of a script will reduce further to $25.

RACGP Chair of Specific Interests in Sexual Health Medicine, Dr Sara Whitburn, said the listing helps reduce financial barriers and expands women’s contraceptive choices.

The PBS addition coincides with an increase to the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) rebate for IUD and contraceptive implant insertion. The RACGP and Sexual and Reproductive Health Australia are also offering free AusLARC training for GPs to insert and remove IUDs and implants.

According to the Federal Government, these changes will benefit around 300,000 women annually, saving each person up to $400 in out-of-pocket costs. Health and Ageing Minister Mark Butler said the reforms aim to remove cost and access barriers, increasing the use of long-acting reversible contraceptives in Australia.
