National Standards for Counsellors and Psychotherapists Now Released
13 Oct 2025
Counsellors and psychotherapists play a vital role in helping Australians manage mental health and wellbeing. The new standards outline expectations in six key areas:
-
Education and training
-
Professional practice
-
Ethics
-
Competency
-
Diversity and inclusion
-
Quality assurance
The standards were developed with input from counsellors, psychotherapists, education providers, service organisations, and people with lived experience. A summary report explaining the development process is available for review.
Further consultation on how to implement the standards will begin in late 2025, with updates provided on the consultation hub.
