MBS compliance activities
18 Apr 2025
AMA members should be aware of current and ongoing MBS compliance activities. The Department of Health and Aged Care is conducting an education campaign on billing MBS items 132 and 133. If you receive a letter as part of this campaign you should use it as an opportunity to review your practices. If you have concerns you should contact the Department.
We also want to remind members that patients are not eligible for MBS rebates if patient or provider is overseas. Section 10 of the Health Insurance Act 1973 requires both the provider and patient to be in Australia for the service to be eligible for Medicare benefits.
More information on MBS compliance can be found here: https://www.health.gov.au/topics/medicare/compliance
The AMA will be hosting a webinar on MBS compliance on 3 June. More information will be shared with you closer to the date.
