Major Milestone Reached in National GP Registrar Experience Project

25 Nov 2025

The Registrar Clinical Encounters in Training (ReCEnT) project provides detailed insights into the clinical and educational experiences of general practice registrars, helping identify what shapes their decision-making and how best to support them throughout their training journey.

ReCEnT tracks the types of patients registrars see, the conditions they manage, and the actions they take during consultations. It also monitors how their practice evolves as they progress through training. To date, more than 6600 registrars and almost 2000 general practices across Australia have taken part.

Professor Parker Magin, Senior Research Unit Academic Advisor within the RACGP’s GP Training Medical Education team and Conjoint Professor at the University of Newcastle, said the milestone reflects the long-term value of the project.

He noted that ReCEnT began as a small pilot in 2009 and has since expanded nationwide, becoming a trusted resource for registrars, supervisors and practice managers seeking a deeper understanding of training experiences and areas for development.

As former Chief Investigator, Professor Magin said the project’s data informs a broad range of education and training activities, including registrar self-reflection, teaching strategies, curriculum design and GP training policy.

Registrars participating in ReCEnT record information from 60 consecutive consultations during each of their three general practice terms. Their feedback is compared with national data to help identify learning needs and areas where more confident clinical decision-making is required, as well as supporting preparation for Fellowship exams.

Professor Magin acknowledged that reaching the one-million-consultation mark after 16 years was only possible thanks to the combined efforts of registrars, supervisors, practices, medical educators, collaborators and training organisations.

All ReCEnT resources can be accessed on the RACGP website.
The program is funded by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing and is approved by the RACGP’s National Research and Evaluation Ethics Committee.
