International Harmonisation of Ingredient Names (IHIN) - changes to the PBS Schedule effective 1 August 2023

As a part of the IHIN reform, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) updated over 200 active ingredient names used in Australia to align with names used internationally. In some cases, the name changes were significant. To allow a transition period for consumers and health professionals to become familiar with the new names, from 1 May 2020 medicine labels were required to display both the old and new ingredient names. For detailed information about the transition to sole ingredient names, please refer to the TGA website.
During the transition period, dual ingredient names were included within the PBS Schedule where applicable. While dual labelling of ingredients of most medicines listed in the PBS Schedule ceased on 1 August 2023, a small set of ingredient names will continue with dual labelling, consistent with TGA advice.
