Have your say on the GST status of pain relief medicine
25 Aug 2025
We’re reviewing the GST-free status of small packs of common pain relief, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and paracetamol. You can now have your say until 8 September 2025.
Currently, small packs of 25 tablets or fewer of pain relief medicine that contain aspirin, ibuprofen and paracetamol are free from GST.
It’s set that way under the GST-free Supply (Drugs and Medicinal Preparations) Determination 2015.
This determination expires on 1 October 2025. If not renewed by then, GST will start applying to these products, making them more expensive.
We’re proposing to renew the determination unchanged, because it’s consistent with larger packs of pain relief medications sold in pharmacies, which aren’t subject to GST.
We want to hear the views of suppliers, manufacturers and the public. You can have your say until 8 September in our Consultation Hub.
