Harland back home
05 Sep 2025
Born at 32 weeks gestation and weighing just 618 grams – the size of a typical 24-week baby – Harland faced a challenging start to life. He was diagnosed with severe neonatal lung disease, which put extra strain on his heart and lungs, and his high-risk pregnancy added to the worry.
“My placenta was less than half the size it should have been,” Alicia said. “It was so scary, but I knew he was strong. He’s proven he’s a fighter.”
During his time in hospital, Harland received care across multiple wards, including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Special Care Nursery, Children’s Critical Care, and Paediatric wards, with nearly 500 staff supporting him along the way.
The family has celebrated many milestones and overcome many challenges during the past seven months. Harland’s discharge was a special moment, with staff creating a Guard of Honour and cheering him out of Gold Coast University Hospital.
Neonatal Discharge Coordinator Helen said: “There was a time we didn’t know if he would make it home, so it’s really special to be here now.”
Harland will continue to use home oxygen for the next 12 months and attend regular check-ups at GCUH. His parents are excited about the simple joys of life at home, including introducing him to their dog and enjoying family cuddles.
Alicia expressed her gratitude: “There are so many team members who have become like family to us. We’re all happy and well because of that, and I’m incredibly grateful.”
