GPs Key to Safe Expansion of LARC Services, Says RACGP

The advice comes in a submission to the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) Review Advisory Committee (MRAC), which is assessing whether current MBS support for LARC insertion and removal is appropriate and accessible.

Earlier recommendations from MRAC informed the women’s health package announced in February, including higher fees for LARC services and support for GPs, nurse practitioners, and other specialists. The latest draft report proposes extending MBS access to endorsed midwives for hormonal implant and IUD insertion and removal, but not to any other provider groups.

While recognising the role midwives can play, the RACGP cautions that procedures must occur within a multidisciplinary team led by a qualified GP. The college emphasised that GPs bring essential clinical knowledge and experience, including counselling on contraceptive options, assessing risks, and managing potential complications.

“Patient safety depends on qualified medical practitioners being involved in the insertion and removal of LARCs, supported by clear communication and shared care between all health professionals,” the RACGP submission states.

The college also highlighted the need for interoperable medical records to ensure continuity of care, particularly in pregnancy and reproductive health. Funding GP-delivered LARC services, including through bulk billing and improved rebates, remains a cost-effective way to support safe, sustainable care in the community.
