GPs Deliver ‘Very Positive’ Health Checks for WA Politicians
15 Oct 2025
The seven-member delegation offered state representatives assessments for diabetes, heart disease, and high cholesterol, while also advocating for improved access to primary care.
RACGP Vice President and WA Chair, Dr Ramya Raman, described the event as “very positive,” noting the engagement with politicians across the political spectrum.
Key Advocacy Requests Presented to Parliament
-
Incentivising GP consultations within a week of hospital discharge to reduce readmissions.
-
Expanding access to non-urgent, routine GP care after hours.
-
Providing free life-saving RSV and meningococcal B vaccines.
-
Appointing a Chief GP Advisor for Western Australia.
Dr Raman emphasised that while general practices are federally funded, they operate within a state-level ecosystem, making engagement with state policymakers essential. She also highlighted successful collaborations, such as the ADHD program, as examples of how GPs contribute to state-level health initiatives.
The Parliament visit, first held last year, is expected to become a recurring event, strengthening relationships and giving politicians insight into the realities of grassroots general practice.
