Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that can lead to serious complications. Common symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a red spotty rash. Symptoms usually appear 10 days after exposure, but can take up to 18 days.
The best protection against measles is vaccination. Two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine provide the best protection. In Queensland, the vaccine is free for:
-
Children at 12 and 18 months (or earlier if travelling overseas)
-
Anyone born in or after 1966 who has not had two doses
People unsure if they have received two doses are encouraged to get vaccinated, as additional doses are safe.
Free community immunisation clinics are available across the Gold Coast. No appointments are needed – just bring your Medicare card and vaccination record or personal health record. Immunisations are also offered at select GPs and pharmacies.
