Federal Government Unveils GP Training Incentive Package
15 Oct 2025
The $248.7 million program, first announced in the 2025–26 Federal Budget, is designed to encourage more junior doctors to pursue a career in general practice.
Key benefits for eligible GP registrars on Commonwealth-funded training pathways include:
-
$30,000 salary incentive at the start of community-based general practice training
-
Study leave funding of up to five days per year
-
Parental leave: up to 20 weeks for primary caregivers and two weeks for secondary caregivers, covering births, adoptions, or long-term fostering of a child up to age 16
The program is set to commence from semester one, 2026, supporting registrars as they transition from hospital-based to community-based training. Applications are not yet open, but updates will be available via the program website.
RACGP President Dr Michael Wright said the initiative is a “long overdue” policy that will make it easier for junior doctors to choose general practice, describing it as a “smart policy” that supports the next generation of GPs.
