Bulk-billing claims now limited to 12 months
18 Sep 2025
The change, announced in the 2024–25 Federal Budget, took effect on 5 September 2025. It reduces the previous two-year submission period and aims to improve the integrity of Medicare, according to the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing (DoHDA).
-
Any bulk-billed service from 5 September onwards must be claimed within one year to be automatically paid.
-
Services provided before 5 September can still be claimed within the original two-year limit.
DoHDA says most claims are already submitted within a year, so the change is expected to have minimal impact.
GPs can still apply for late claims outside the time limit under existing arrangements.
