Ambulance Tasmania Honoured at National Search and Rescue Awards

17 Oct 2025

At the Australian Search and Rescue Awards in Brisbane, the National Search and Rescue Council (NATSAR Council) presented Ambulance Tasmania and other Tasmanian agencies with the Professional Award for their role in the extraordinary mission.

The rescue involved Valdas Bieliauskas, who was trapped in the Franklin River for 24 hours. In a critical part of the operation, his leg was amputated underwater to free him. Ambulance Tasmania crews demonstrated exceptional clinical skill, experience, and resilience throughout the mission. The team’s efforts had a significant impact locally, nationally, and internationally.

Ambulance Tasmania also received a Commendation (Professional Award) for rescuing a family and their young child stranded for 36 hours at the Walls of Jerusalem in July 2024. Crews provided care and support under freezing winter conditions, navigating a challenging and deteriorating environment.

The awards ceremony, hosted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and Queensland Police Service, acknowledged the courage and professionalism of all involved. Among the Ambulance Tasmania team recognised were: Chris Monaghan, Edith Wirsu, Mitchell Parkinson, and Adam Marmion.

The department also acknowledged the contribution of Royal Hobart Hospital staff for the care provided to Mr Bieliauskas during his recovery.
