Accessible Free Mental Health Support for All Australians

Anyone in Australia who needs support can access free, confidential mental health and wellbeing services through Medicare Mental Health. These services are available 24/7 and can be used in person, online, or over the phone no appointment or referral is required.

Today, 10 September 2025, is World Suicide Prevention Day—a time to remember those lost to suicide and to reflect on how we can support people who may be struggling.

If you or someone you know needs help, free and confidential support is available 24/7 through the following services:

  • Lifeline: 13 11 44 – National crisis support

  • 13 YARN: 13 92 76 – Crisis support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

  • Kids Helpline: 1800 55 1800 – Support for young people aged 5–25

  • Suicide Call Back Service: 1300 659 467 – Telephone and online counselling for anyone affected by suicide

  • StandBy Support After Suicide: 1300 727 247 – Face-to-face or phone support for those impacted by suicide

  • Roses in The Ocean Peer CARE Companion Warmline: 1800 77 7337 – Support for people with lived experience of suicide bereavement

Medicare Mental Health Services are also available for free to anyone in Australia, without the need for a referral or diagnosis. These services are suitable for individuals feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or worried about themselves or someone they care about. Services can be accessed in person, over the phone, or online.

Available Medicare Mental Health services include:

  • Medicare Mental Health Centres – Provide information, support, and services from qualified professionals. No appointment or referral required.

  • Medicare Mental Health Phone Service – Call 1800 595 212, Monday to Friday, 8:30am–5:00pm (excluding public holidays) to speak with trained professionals.

  • Medicare Mental Health Kids Hubs – Safe spaces for children aged 12 and under, offering support for families and carers.

Everyone is welcome, whether it’s their first time seeking help or they have experienced mental health challenges before.
