Today, the government introduced a draft bill in Parliament to set up Australia’s Centre for Disease Control (CDC).

The Australian Government has introduced draft legislation to set up an independent Centre for Disease Control (CDC). This expert and trusted agency will help protect Australians from diseases and other public health threats, marking an important step in strengthening the nation’s preparedness and public trust.

If approved by Parliament, the Australian CDC will officially start as a standalone agency on 1 January 2026, building on the work already done by the interim CDC.
