World Breastfeeding Week 2025

World Breastfeeding Week 2025

07 Aug 2025

Meet Bernadette – the Lactation Consultant for North West Maternity Services.

During World Breastfeeding Week, Bernie is taking the time to celebrate each and every family as they navigate caring and feeding their baby.

With a background in paediatric and neonatal nursing, she said that there is a huge need to support families navigating breastfeeding and infant feeding.

“It can be really challenging, and I feel passionate about early support to promote the best outcomes long term.

“As a mum myself, there have been key healthcare workers that supported me during my pregnancies and early days that I am forever grateful for.

“We all need nonjudgemental, contemporaneous, evidence-based advice to help us navigate transitioning to parenthood.

“My role as a lactation consultant is supporting breastfeeding and lactation and working with the families to help them achieve their breastfeeding goals.”

As well as Lactation Consultants in each hospital, everyday Child Health and Parenting Services (CHaPS) supports families with breastfeeding, offering extra help when it’s needed.

Whether it’s better understanding your baby’s feeding cues or needing help with pain and discomfort, this support is based on each family's needs which could include extra appointments, home visits, dropping into one of our Open Sessions, short-term intensive support at regional Parenting Centres based in Launceston, Burnie and Hobart, and referrals to the Sustained Home Visiting Program for longer-term support.

World Breastfeeding Week is a time to raise awareness about breastfeeding and highlight the support that is available to Tasmanian mums and families.

CHaPS nurses are well equipped to support all aspects of infant feeding including breastfeeding, storing and using expressed milk, and also formula feeding.
